Mixtape Review: Terreyl Fields – YOU'RE MAKING ME FEEL LIKE THIS
I've been unable to review music for a while due to writer's block, but recently I discovered an artist who reignited my passion for music criticism. The artist, Terreyl Fields from the United States, followed me on X. Since then, I've been following his growth and new releases, including his debut mixtape, YOU'RE MAKING ME FEEL LIKE THIS. Coming into this project, I had low expectations since I wasn't familiar with Terreyl Fields or his previous works. However, the level of artistry in this mixtape is undeniable. He skillfully blends Hip-hop and Dance genres with hard-hitting lyrics and introspective songwriting. Some of these tracks are among the most beautiful songs I've had the privilege to hear. The production quality rivals that of albums like BLUE LIPS by ScHoolboy Q or TYO 808 by MadeinTYO. Terreyl Fields' talent and creativity shine throughout the mixtape, and his passion for production elevates its quality to a level achieved by only a few established artists.
Starting with "COME HARD" was a deliberate move, setting the tone and asserting command. The instrumental on this track is experimental yet nostalgic, evoking 90s vibes. It's a perfect introduction that captures the listener's attention and showcases Terreyl's talents as both a rapper and producer. The transition to "STEPPERS" is seamless and commendable, featuring Terreyl exchanging bars with Hayelo, VERYRAREPROPHET, and Nory. This track feels like a cypher of emerging MCs battling for the top spot with their freestyles. Each rapper delivers soul-searching lyricism that resonates with the listener. It's a flawless track with top-notch production.
What fascinates me about Terreyl Fields is his effortless ability to switch between swagger and personality. On "IMAGINE," he glides over a psychedelic instrumental, offering clever one-liners like, “I’m playing every role / Director in the zone.” Evidently, Terreyl Fields is also a Creative Director, and this line clearly shows that he raps about his real life and experiences. YOU'RE MAKING ME FEEL LIKE THIS balances moments of introspection and exhilaration perfectly. Each song serves its purpose, allowing Terreyl Fields to explore musical dimensions beyond his initial vision. It's a compelling and inspiring body of work that left me in awe. It's easily one of the best releases of the year, from an artist who doesn't let low streams limit his creativity.
On "WHIPLASH," Terreyl delivers once again with a dynamic two-part instrumental, providing ample space for unrestrained self-expression. It’s a brief yet impactful piece that fulfills its role admirably. The subsequent track, "WHOA!," reveals a different facet of Terreyl Fields, blending House and Dance in a manner reminiscent of the vibrant London House music scene. He incorporates Travis Scott's energetic hook from "NO BYSTANDERS" with “Fuck the club up” and Wheezy's iconic ad-lib “Wheezy outta here,” adding an element of surprise crucial for memorability. The second half of YOU'RE MAKING ME FEEL LIKE THIS leans more towards R&B and Dance, highlighting Terreyl Fields' vulnerability and affirming his versatility as an artist. At times, his sound parallels August Alsina, particularly on "NO WAY." This mixtape has firmly established Terreyl Fields, and it's only a matter of time before he garners widespread recognition.
Terreyl Fields' debut mixtape is cohesive, introspective, and exquisitely refined. It stands as a testament to a multifaceted artist's relentless pursuit of capturing hearts across the globe. This body of work will age gracefully, with each track harmoniously interwoven to create a satisfying listening experience.
Standout Tracks: "COME HARD," "IMAGINE," "SLIDE FOR U," & "INTHECLUB"
